It really does "pay" to caption your online media

The benefits of adding captions to online media like youtube far out weighs the option of leaving the viewer to make their own assumptions about your video.

There are so many times where I have attempted to search for a specific video and without the captions it makes it very difficult to find.

I'm not sure if you have ever watched the show about funny home videos. I believe that the show would not have been so successful without the use of the funny captions being read by the announcer.

Hearing with Subtitles

Subtitles may be an unfamiliar sight for some, but to those who are hearing impaired, those who work to transcribe words, and those who are fond of watching foreign movies, media screens are commonly accented by the little running lines at the bottom of the screen.

Crowdsourcing for transcription work

We are now making extensive use of crowdsourcing facilities for all of our transcription work. Using Amazon's Mechanical Turk service we are able to turn around significant volumes of transcription work at relatively little cost. The trials that we have carried out so far have been very successful and we propose to use more crowd sourcing from now on.

Google Video Site Maps

Video Site Maps are a great way for getting your video content indexed and included in Google Universal Search. A video site map is basically an XML file containing the URL of the landing page hosting the video together with additional meta data. You can include details such as the title, description, duration, keywords and more. It is a great way for directly associating your video with relevant keywords and importantly your landing page.

Information about the act is available on the Government's website (http://www.dwp.gov.uk/employers/dda/) . Some of the commissions and institutes that are advocates of the act include the Royal National Institute of the Blind and the disability rights commission.

Dragon's offering for transcription

After testing with the in built Vista voice recognition software, I performed similar tests with Dragon Naturally Speaking. The test involved installation, setup and a 40 minute transcription task from an mp3 audio sample.

Introduction

A few years ago, I was messing around trying to create a few web sites. What I noticed is how little interest the Search Engines seemed to pay to the sites I had created. I couldnt figure out why my sites werent showing up in google, msn or yahoo results pages. I was n fact completely green about search and knew nothing about optimisation. Today there is little suprise to me that those web sites never got a peek into the top 100 listings within search results.

Voice Recognition

I am doing a little research on the performance of voice recognition software versus manual typing.
A proficient touch typist can type between 60-80 words per minute. This is considered very good. However the average reading speed is between 150-250 words per minute (a little slower for myself). This is considerably faster than what even the best touch typists could achieve.

Using Vista voice recognition for Transcriptions

Vista includes voice recognition software as standard.  I’ve been performing a small test using the software to see how well it performs for transcripting purpose.
